Dr. Wenhui Hou Visits from China
The Leopold House had special guests between the holidays: Professor Wenhui Hou from Qingdao, China and our friend and Advisory Board member, Professor Susan Flader from Columbia, Missouri. They stayed overnight to hear about the significance of Leopold's childhood in nature and how it can still be a model for our youth and parents today. Clockwise around the table: Dr. Flader, Dr. Hou, Lois Rigdon, Kathy Brower, Jerry Rigdon.
Wenhui translated ASCA into Chinese and the book is now in it's 7th printing. Thanks to her sensitive translation of Leopold, all Chinese 6th graders read his March ASCA essay, "The Geese Return" in their textbooks.
Many thanks to Wenhui for donating two editions of the Chinese "A Sand County Almanac" with inscriptions in English and Chinese. We hope to collect similar signed translated copies to illustrate that Leopold's childhood observations evolved into the Ethic which extends around the world.
The professors enjoyed hearing the Burlington Roots Program and visiting Aldo's local tramping sites. Dr. Flader and Dr. Hou visited the Leopold gravesite in Aspen Grove Cemetery--one of Aldo's early birding sites.
